Sheers by Eames and Panton 01.03

Textile innovator Maharam launches its first collection of fabric-based accessories. Maharam Accessories will debut at the Gift Show in New York City Maharam continues to celebrate the work of the great multidisciplinary modernists of the last century with the release of three burnout sheer window coverings: Dot Pattern Sheer Negative, Dot Pattern Sheer Positive and Geometri Sheer. These diaphanous textiles represent Maharam’s first foray into window covering offerings as part of the Textiles of the 20th Century™ series.

To create the airy positive/negative effect of these sheer window coverings Maharam has utilized a sophisticated “burnout” process commonly used in Europe, enabling the creation of depth and substance not possible in a simple printed sheer.

Ray and Charles Eames conceived of Dot Pattern for The Museum of Modern Art’s “Competition for Printed Fabrics” in 1947. Initially introduced by Maharam in March 2000 as a woven upholstery, this new interpretation of Dot Pattern, in both negative and positive burnout motifs, is true to the original scale of the design.

Danish Op-Art design master Verner Panton originally designed Geometri in 1960 for the Astoria Hotel in Trondheim, Norway. That same year he won numerous awards when he covered the walls and ceilings of the Pfister Furniture Company showroom in Zurich with Geometri print in black and white, eliminating traditional boundaries between elements and creating an impressive stage for his now revered Cone seating collection for Plus-Lijne. Maharam issued a woven upholstery reiteration of Geometri last year, and has now transformed this pattern into a thoroughly modern window covering.

All three burnout sheer patterns will be featured in a display of prominent Danish manufacturers sponsored by the Royal Danish Consulate at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) being held at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City May 18th through the 21st.
